Can't enable remote desktop access with Homeserver 12.03

Love your work Darren.
Just installed UserOS Homeserver 12.03.
Doesn't appear to be an option for enabling remote desktop access ie. Applications>Settings>Remote Desktop Setup isn't there?
Also, how do you disable laptop screen when lid is closed - options are Nothing, Suspend, Hibernate and Lock Screen?
Thanks,
Chris

You sure it isn't there? I've just installed it from scratch and Applications -> Settings -> Remote Desktop Setup is right there for me.

Can other readers please check this? Thanks.

Cheers, Darren.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Remote Desktop Sharing package.
It says it is installed but it doesn't appear in any menu and doesn't open when I go to Run Program?
When I try to connect from W7 I get a failed to connect message and no pop up on Homeserver?

Remote Desktop Sharing package? What Remote Desktop Sharing package? We didn't supply one...

Unless you get Remote Desktop Setup running, Windows 7 will not connect.

Are you positively sure it's not in the menu? What about "Launch Remote Desktop Server" - is that listed in the menu?

Same here Darren - I've just today upgraded from previous version of UserOS and although the item 'Launch Remote Desktop Server' does appear - there is no setup/settings option.
Cheers and thanks for all the interesting stuff you've done!

So what does the Settings menu (Applications -> Settings) give you?

I get: Settings manager, Additional drivers, Launch Remote Desktop Server, Network Connections, Remote Desktop Setup, Settings Editor, Software Sources, Ubuntu one.

Get all the others...
Additional drivers, Launch Remote Desktop Server, Network Connections, Settings Editor, Software Sources, Ubuntu one

I get Settings Mnager, Additional drivers, Launch Remote Desktop Server, Network Connections, Open jDK Java 6 Policy Tool, Settings Editor, Software Sources, Ubuntu one.
Remote Desktop Sharing was the only thing I could find when I went to the software centre?
I thought that was what the package was called?

Sorry, it would really help if you could clearly explain what you're doing just so I can put all the pieces together.

At the moment, I'm not sure what's happening because I create a USB flash drive installer from the OS ISO image and I get what I listed above.

It's all fixable but I'd like to know what's happening first.

Cheers, Darren.

Hi Darren, in my case I was upgrading alongside the original v11 installation (I think it was the default option). After this there was an option to import existing packages and settings where possible from v11 and I chose to do this.

Could it be that this part of the process has confused the settings for the new desktop server? - ie it thinks it's configured when in reality it isn't??

Maybe Revhead was doing the same thing?

Cheers
Pete

PS Is the server still Vino? I'm just taking my first tentative steps around Xfce and have yet to discover how to find out what bits go where :-)

I did a clean install.
It worked with the previous version of Homeserver.
The first time I installed 12.03 I didn't read the instructions fully and didn't see the part about not allowing it to upgrade the version of Ubuntu.
So I wiped it and started again, just letting it install updates as instructed.
Got to the bit about allowing remote access only to find it wasn't there.
Don't know what else I can tell you?
I'm only a casual user of Linux.
Had PCLinuxOS installed on my laptop before I got a new Transformer Prime and decided to set up the laptop as a server?
This time around I got the printer to work so I'm reluctant to wipe it and start again?

Yep, it is. We ditched the GNOME 3 desktop environment because, frankly, we didn't like it. But we tried to keep as many things the same as possible without stuffing up the works.

Actually, yep, that could be the reason - I'm doing a fresh install, erasing the previous OS.

Cheers, Darren.

Update:

Bit the bullet and reinstalled v12 alongside v11 as before but didn't import any apps or setting this time.

Imediately after logging in and before downloading any updates I checked that 'Remote desktop setup' was present - it was. I set it up and tested that I could remote in - I could.

Ran the update manager making sure not to do a Partial Update.

After the update and before doing anything else checked for 'Remote desktop setup' - gone!

The good news however is that I can still launch the app remote into the server.

Cheers
Pete

So Darren, how do I renable this? (Without having to reinstal)

Don't know how to put the menu item back but if you enter the following command in a terminal window:

-$ vino-preferences

This will open the preferences window (on my setup at least) and if you also chose the option to Always show the notification area icon, you will then able to access the config by right clicking the icon without going to the terminal.

Hope this helps.

Solved.

It appears one of the updates replaced the 'Remote Desktop Setup' menu item config file. The new file has the added line:
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;
which we don't want and needs to be removed.

I edited the config file by opening a terminal window and entering this command:

sudo leafpad /usr/share/applications/vino-preferences.desktop

As well as deleting the offending line, the item name is also different so if you want to change it back to the more meaningful description then edit the Name line to read:
Name=Remote Desktop Setup

For a linux newbie this has been good learning exercise - I wonder what else lies ahead!
Cheers
Pete

Good on you, PeteMcF. Excellent work!

Sorry I haven't responded but I'm on deadline for the next issue of PC User.

Cheers, Darren.
