Are notebook computers as strong as desktops?

Monday, 07 November, 2005

A laptop is exactly like a desktop computer but everything is very small and compact.

So are laptop computers as strong as desktop computers?

F Max, Sydney, NSW

The average, brand name notebook PC is considerably stronger and more reliable than a desktop PC -- simply because it has to be. People do terrible things to their notebooks (usually by accident) so the manufacturer has to take this into account.

By their very design they don't have wires and cables running through the vast spaces of a near-empty case, waiting to be shaken loose. For instance, most connections are very strong and vibration-proof and the hard disk is inherently strong and able to take G-force shocks that would leave your head spinning.

The trouble is, for everything the manufacturer does to make the notebook strong, we users find a way to mistreat it until it breaks. But just remember that desktop PC's that are regularly transported (such as to LAN parties) regularly need to be opened to have small problems fixed before they will boot.

Could another flavour of the question be are laptops as costly to repair. Laptop displays can be expensive for example. I would suggest a 3 year warranty on any laptop if purchasing new. However I agree with Paul that desktops weren't made to be moved around frequently.

hi F Max. The simple solution to a wide range of things is never presume anything. I own a desktop pc (Dell 2400) and i treat it the same way i would my mobile phone or any other portable device....very carefully. The amount of times i have seen people drop their mobiles is incredible. The covers fall off, the battery makes a beeline for Mars and what do they do? They just reassemble the thing and walk off wondering why no one is calling them. The old joke about making a jet aircraft as strong as the black boxes applies here (and yes i was in an emergency landing once). The way to protect a notebook is easy. If you are not using it, put in into a strong padded carry case with a handle and don't drop it. Paul is right here. Dell punish their computers without mercy until they fail to try to improve the next range of models they release. Unfortunately their are people who think that any electronic device is bullet proof until they find out the hard way. cheers Andy :) :) :) PS: if you know some one who owns a Dell desktop or notebook, ask them to play the Dell Media Experience which comes with a Dell pc. This will show you what Dell do before they release anything.
